Peer Support

‘Leadership by example’ is the philosophy behind Peer Support, but it is more than that. Year12 and 13 students buddy-up with year 9s to help ease their path in to the senior school. The senior leaders have all experienced Peer Support themselves as Year 9s and know the value of having friendly, caring older students on hand to help. This year the seniors participated in a specialised training day before organising fun playground activities and a highly successful Top Town competition. A favourite activity was the waterslide set up on the main rugby field.

Health Centre

Mission Statement – A School based Health Centre offering a holistic approach by providing a range of Services to the students in partnership with our Community.

Vision Statement – To address the Health Needs of Youth within the context of Family, Whanau and Community by providing a full range of Health Services that are appropriate, accessible and affordable to students within the school environment, as well as implementing healthcare to promote good health and achievement.

The Health Centre operates alongside Southern Cross Campus Student Services. The Health Centre is a multidisciplinary primary care facility that provides comprehensive primary medical, social and mental health services, as well as health promotion, education and prevention services for students who might otherwise have limited or no access to healthcare.

The Centre is managed by:

Prem Singh – Nurse Manager/Registered Nurse and Leah Dixon – Registered Nurse.

Our service is private and confidential, but if harm is involved, then we need to discuss the cares with a third person.

The Health Centre is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday with an open door policy.

Students are able to make appointments to see the school doctor and school physio through the nurses.

Doctor Emalia Lavemai is our school Doctor and is available on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11.30am to 1.30pm. Please see a nurse first to discuss health needs.

School physio, Imran Raisat, is available throughout the school terms during the day and times are to be booked through the nurses.

Any student who needs to come to Health Centre during class time needs a note signed by the teacher/reliever teacher.

If the nurse needs to call a student from class, we will send a note with the office monitor to give to class teacher.

If any student has medical condition we are aware of, it is entered on KAMAR under the Medical tab. If teachers have any concerns about a child, please contact us and we will follow up with the child and give you feedback as soon as possible.

Education and Health Go Hand–In-Hand.

Restorative Practice

SCC is a restorative school. This means that positive relationships are at the core of how we learn, how we treat each other, how we behave, how we promote peace and how we resolve conflict if and when it arises. SCC has many programmes and initiatives that support this approach.

Restorative practice was conceptualised in the school in 2008. The vision was developed through meetings, workshops, staff professional development and student leadership programmes. The school liked the concept and vision and over time the school developed a whole school approach. Continuums of restorative practices at SCC now include preventative, proactive and reactive strategies

Preventative strategies, which are applicable to everyone in the school, include the development of social and emotional skills to resolve conflict in caring and respectful ways. For students this is done through curriculum-based programmes, circle-based approaches in the classroom, buddying and mentoring. For staff it requires ongoing training, professional development and the formulation of best practice regarding positive relationship building. Proactive strategies, which apply to only some of the school population, are when relationships are repaired through restorative mini chats or conferences with groups, individuals or classroom circles. Finally reactive approaches are for the more serious transgressions where re-building relationships is required. This may be done through restorative conferences, mediation facilitated by adults or peer mediations facilitated by peers. This level applies to a very small portion of the school population. Parents and families are valued members of our community and so can be involved at any stage of the restorative continuum.

Restorative practice has proven to be a positive approach to creating a safe and supportive environment.

PB4L – The School-Wide Framework

Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide (PB4LSW) is a long-term approach that supports schools to create a culture where positive behaviour and learning thrive. Students are taught in very specific terms what behaviours are expected of them. There is a consistent response to these behaviours across the school. We have now shifted our focus away from the terminology of PB4L to being “The SCC Way”, at SCC this is what we expected.
The principles behind PB4L

Positive Behaviour for Learning believes:

  • positive behaviour can be learnt and difficult and disruptive behaviour can be unlearnt
  • individual children are not a ‘problem’ – we need to change the environment around them to support positive behaviour
  • punishing and isolating children doesn’t bring about long-term and sustainable changes in behaviour
  • we need to concentrate on a small number of evidence-based programmes and frameworks that we know work
  • there are no quick fixes. Behaviour change takes time.

The difference PB4L will make

  • Children and young people will be more engaged and will achieve at school.
  • Teachers and leaders will spend more time teaching and be less stressed.
  • Educators will keep more children and young people at school, will feel confident and will feel supported in addressing behaviour problems.
  • Parents and whānau will have more positive relationships with their children and home life will be more positive and harmonious.
  • School leaders and Boards will celebrate the learning and achievement of all of their students.

Careers

As an on-going process, we hope to achieve:
The development of knowledge, skills and attitudes which will assist students to make an informed decision about school and post-school options, and enable effective participation in a productive working life that contributes to the economic and social betterment of the individual and community.
To achieve this general goal, a deliberate and planned scheme of activities is encouraged through a cross-curricular approach implemented by the Campus College.

Objectives:

Specific objectives intended to bring our school closer to this ideal situation include the following:

  • On-going staff development and training.
  • Development of new technologies delivering careers information.
  • Develop better career information dissemination to students and families via regular newsletter (part of school newsletter, display on school website).
  • Introduce as many students as possible to the skills and knowledge needed to make informed career decisions.
  • Continue providing an effective and integrated Career Education program.
  • Maintain up to date resources.
  • Support students at risk of leaving with few qualifications or a defined pathway and assist them in the next step on their career.
