Trades Academies

Trades Academies

Academies give students ‘real life’ training by placing them in industry for up to two days per week.  They operate exactly the same as regular employees in this ‘no-frills’ approach to education. The remainder of the time, students study cores and elective modules in purpose-build training facilities based at Southern Cross Campus.

Current students can select from a range of Academies such as:

  • Automotive
  • Building Construction
  • Hospitality

Academies are focused on career-based training and progression into the industry, whilst preserving the integrity of life-long learning and educational practices.
This approach enables students to develop career pathways with specific training to be ready for employment or sector-specific higher training opportunities.  The benefits of Academy based learning are higher student engagement, authentic contexts and the development of work ethics through a practical training environment.
Agreements with several hospitality and trades partners, an Academies Manager, and customised on-site workbooks are just part of the make-up of the Academies.

Requirements

  • NCEA Level 1 or approved equivalent
  • Between 16 & 19 years of age
  • Entry Interview
  • Passion for the chosen industry.

Academies are not zoned or area-bound. All may enquire if they meet the above criteria.
